Friday Night Calm was a full-house last night! 9 stunning souls all came together to breathe out the stress of the week and start their weekends off right! You guys, I love this gig… like, “pinch me, I must be dreaming” LOVE this gig and I want to talk to you for a minute about the things that we let hold us back.
I had a moment of reflection last night as I was guiding students through a Durga Breath exercise. This time last year I was studying like a madwoman for my training. I never imagined one year later I would have my own studio and I would be guiding a group of women through the very breathing exercise I was studying. I thought about how I almost let my insecurities about my body hold me back.
I’m not your “typical” yoga instructor. Truth? I’m curvy, overweight, plus-sized, fat…. whatever adjective you would like to use to describe a woman with some “extraness” to her, lol. And I’m so tired of that being an issue but it is… and it’s a conversation that I vow to keep having until it’s not a conversation anymore…
Yoga has nothing to do with the size of your body. Yoga is a safe place to finally CONNECT all the parts of your body to your breath and movement. When we struggle with body image we become so disconnected and break ourselves into pieces that we loathe and/or tolerate and Yoga slowly brings all that is YOU back together, back to love and acceptance and the realization that your body is just the house of your soul. And how you treat this house and feel about this house is completely in your control – it’s the hardest work I’ve ever done to drown out the noise of our media and culture but the work I have to do is far more important than the size of my jeans.
I’m telling you this today in case your “extraness” is what’s stopping you from getting on a yoga mat. You don’t have to register for a class or a Workshop to start this conversation with me. Please reach out. Private message, email, or text me.
You are a gifted teacher.
Thank you. It’s so rewarding to find such joy, meaning and purpose in what I do for work! I am truly blessed <3
